GENDER DIFFERENCES IN LEARNING STYLE SPECIFIC TO SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING AND MATH – STEM

There are gender differences in learning styles specific to science, math, engineering and technology (STEM) that teachers of these subjects should keep in mind when developing lesson plans and teaching in the classroom. First, overall, girls have much less experience in the hands-on application of learning principles in lab settings than boys. This could occur in the computer lab, the science lab, or the auto lab – the principle is the same for all of these settings – it requires an overall technology problem-solving schema, accompanied by use and manipulation of tools, and spatial relation skills that very few girls bring with them to the classroom on day one in comparison to boys.Let’s look at some of the reasons why girls come to the STEM classroom with less of the core skills needed for success in this subject area. Overall, girls and boys play with different kinds of games in early childhood that provide different types of learning experiences. Most girls play games that emphasize relationships (i.e., playing house, playing with dolls) or creativity (i.e., drawing, painting). In contrast, boys play computer and video games or games that emphasize building (i.e., LEGO?), both of which develop problem-solving, spatial-relationship and hands-on ... [more..]

TECHNOLOGY

What is technology? I bet that everyone you ask will give you a different definition, depending on the things he/she uses. I'm sure your mother will tell you that technology makes her life easy because of all the gadgets that were invented, your younger brother will say technology means latest generation computers and high detailed games, you will probably say that it is your mobile phone. I will say for me technology is semi-cocked food. It was probably the best invention ever. But it's just me.So, we have established how we, the mortals, see technology. But wouldn't be really interesting to see what it really is? Well it deals with how a species customs and knowledge of instruments meant to ease the life and how it affects its capability to fit into the environment. This is a general definition. We, the humans see it as a result of the interaction of different sciences and engineering.Technology is one of those terms that actually cannot be defined. It cam mean everything from a main board to a way of organizing a factory. It can refer to practically everything, because all of the things around us were, at a certain point technological breakdowns. How can ... [more..]

ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY – BETTER, FASTER, CHEAPER

I work in an industry that has seen huge changes in the past 25 years. The technology in engineering has grown and changed so much that we are executing project with half (sometimes less) the manpower we needed before. I work mainly in the oil and gas industry but I know that in other areas it is possibly even more dramatic. I have been in engineering industry for 25 years and when I started computers were in a main computer room and there were only a few and only few people who could run them. They slowly started moving on to the desktop about five years later. I was hired mainly because I had taken CAD courses to upgrade my skills during an economic downturn. I ended up developing and teaching courses in AutoCAD for the company. From those simple beginnings we have come a long way.Let me give an example of that change. The company I work for had a project for a client 30 years ago and we managed to get the second phase of the project 12 years later while I was with the company. The technology of the process had not changed much so the plant ... [more..]

ENGINEERING STAFFING

Engineering is considered as an inventive, innovative and prestigious profession. A project can never be accomplished without the contribution of an engineer. An engineer designs and plans a project on the basis of its technical specifications. Engineering jobs have bright future and are categorized into various disciplines like civil, electrical, mechanical, electronics, computer science, textile, information technology and many more. Engineering staffing is much more in comparison to other civil and administration jobs because the demand of engineers and engineering jobs has tremendously increased. In this world of modernization, doctors, architects and many other professionals depend directly or indirectly on engineering services. All engineering jobs are prioritized as technical jobs and generated in all technical companies. The day to day engineering and re-engineering technology creates number of engineering jobs in IT industry. Engineers are naturally talented with studying different branches of engineering and domain they work on. They should have good aptitude, good communication skill, inter personal relationship, the analytical skill, leadership quality and ability for problems solving. In IT sector, engineering staffing is plenty but its challenging. IT companies seldom face problem when the recruit directly. They may or may not have right process to recruit right candidates. IT companies have ... [more..]
