WHY NOT CONSIDER A CAREER IN IT?

Any IT qualifications or experience in IT will help you with a career in IT, but many companies use their own IT tests from typing and calculating to logical problem solving to asses candidates. Increasingly academic qualifications are becoming less important than industry recognised ones or relevant experience, as the rate of change within the industry picks up more and more speed. IT job titles can be complicated and confusing, but there are basically three types of role; programmer, operator and support staff. Programmer Also known as software engineer or developer. To put it simply, a programmer writes in code to get a computer or piece of software to complete a certain tasks. You are likely to be working as part of a team, all working on small individual elements of the overall operation. Only if you were experienced would you be in charge of overseeing a whole program. Because the computers and software are constantly changing, you'll be constantly learning new programming languages on training courses, and you will be expected to adapt to these changes. TAKE CHARGE OF YOUR CAREER — YOU DON’T HAVE A CHOICE

Recently a high school student sent me an AllExperts question which boiled down to: Which computer career pays the most money and has the most job security? I was floored. Job security? Does this 16 year old kid write term papers on a typewriter? Call her friends on an AT&T Princess telephone? Twirl a hula hoop? Listen to a transistor radio? Make the most money? Does anybody really give credence to those tables showing that in Boise ID the average programmer makes $1543 more than the average network engineer? Who cares? Do you want to be average? Is anybody average? The truth is, although it'd be irresponsible of me to have advised her to study COBOL, she'll make the most money at whatever career she most enjoys, given some reasonable demand for it in the marketplace. The more she works at giving her employers her best, the more money she'll make. The more she uses her skills to solve more problems for more people -- and this can and should be some activity far beyond normal employment -- the more money she'll make. Chances are, by the time she graduates from college the highest paying ... [more..]

The world of broadcasting offers a wide and varied career with a number of disparate job roles. Most obviously it means working within the television industry, but radio is often overlooked as a medium and can offer just as much job satisfaction as working in television. Both components of the field hold a great responsibility to keep the population informed of current affairs, breaking worldwide news stories as soon as they happen. They must also educate people in all manner of subjects from natural history to astrology throughout their lives. Whilst entertaining all ages; broadcasters must generate programming that will be engaging to a variety of generations. Sporting events which are often seen as the most important function of the business must also be reported upon. Broadcasting can generally be split into two diverse sectors. Firstly there is the production element, this evidently consists of program production, be it radio show, situation comedy or period drama. This ultimately is the creative arm of the business and offers those with a creative edge free rein in producing programming that will appeal to a mass audience. Added to this, production of programming can be focussed to a sub audience, sectors such as children's ... [more..]
